WordPress Plugin: Cleaner WordPress Editor – Trying To Make WordPress Editing a Pleasure

Every time I write a post for my blog, it doesn’t feel right. The default WordPress editor just doesn’t cut it for me. There’s too much junk around the editor text box, the font isn’t right, the contrast is too high. So I decided to do something about it. I googled and googled some more and found bits of code which I have put together in form of a WordPress plugin. Check out the screenshots that follow to see what the plugin does to your WordPress editor.

Screenshot WordPress New Post

Screenshot WordPress Post Edit Screen

Features:

  • Editor Font will be changed to Georgia instead of Consolas
  • Editor Font size will be increased by 110% in the Visual Editor and 120% in the HTML Editor. The Line Height will also be increased accordingly.
  • Editor Background Color will be changed to #FCFCFC and the Font Color to #333333. This is to reduce strain on the eyes. The original black and white combination has a high contrast.
  • The Editor will be set into the Single Column Mode.
  • The Left Side Navigation bar will be collapsed.
  • All extra non functional elements will be hidden.
Since the plugin forces the Edit Screen into a single column scheme, once you have installed the plugin, all the widgets which you normally see on the right sidebar, like the publish button widget, will be pushed below the Visual/HTML Editor box. You will have to scroll down to see those widgets. Those widgets can be dragged and dropped to reorder them. However if you do re-order them, when you deactivate this plugin, they will retain that order and won’t revert to the original scheme. So please do make sure that you like the new Edit Screen, before re-ordering your widgets.
At this point there’s no way to configure this plugin, but if there’s enough interest, I will create a settings screen.

You can download the plugin using the link below.

You will have to scroll down and you will see all the widgets that you used to see on the right hand side normally. You might want to manually drag and drop them to reorder them according to usability.

Hi Michael, you’re right – there’s no right hand sidebar anymore, because its using the single column schema now. All the widgets that were there in the right hand side bar have now been pushed below the Edit Box. So will have have to scroll down to see them.
