Ubuntu uses Dash (Debian Almquist shell) as the default shell. However Dash isn’t as feature rich as Bash and I often require Bash specific features for my projects. The official way of changing the default shell to Bash is:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash

At the prompt, select No.

configure ubuntu to use bash as default shell
